This 12 piece set from Chicago Cutlery was made in conjunction with the 75th Anniversary of Chicago Cutlery. As a commemorative edition, one would expect an excellent set of knives. Unfortunately, like many other knife sets from Chicago Cutlery, these knives have a problem with rust and staining.
While the instructions warn to only hand wash these knives, rusting and spotting still occurs. Unless you take meticulous care of these knives, oiling after each use and sharpen regularly, they will not live up to the manufacturer’s promises.
As with other knife sets made by Chicago Cutlery, the knives do perform well. Whether it is slicing a loaf of bread, cutting up a chicken or enjoying a juicy steak, these knives work quite well. They are not up to the level required by a professional chef, but, for the average individual, they are more than adequate.
One little extra of this set is the inclusion of a 3 inch peeler. Most sets do not include this handy little blade that gets lots of use in the kitchen. Peeling potatoes and other vegetables is easy work with this peeler.
Made in China, the block is somewhat questionable. Protective sleeves tend to come out when removing a knife and the finish is not up to expected standards. However, if you practice good maintenance techniques, only hand washing and drying, your knives should provide many years of satisfactory performance.
